Handbill for 1843 auction at Swan Inn, Meltham

£1.50

Description

A high-resolution downloadable scan of an original waxed paper handbill for an auction held at the Swan Inn, Meltham, on 27 April 1843.

The Swan Inn (previously known as the Shoulder of Mutton) is believed to have belonged to at least four generations of the Garlick family, who were butchers, brewers and innkeepers. John Garlick (1801-1856), who is named on the poster, was forced to sell the inn after being declared an insolvent debtor in October 1846.

Please note that this is a historic item and the may show typical signs of age, including small blemishes, creases, marks and stains. Wherever possible, obvious damage was sympathetically restored using Adobe Photoshop. Please examine the product images on this page carefully prior to ordering. In particular, the handbill appears to have been folded after printing as the ink has stained though to the over side.

The original handbill was scanned at 600 dots per inch (DPI) and is slightly larger than A3 paper size. The final full-sized image is 7,801 by 9,401 pixels (including a white border of approximately 200 pixels).

Once purchased, you will have access to the following files to download:

  • Acrobat PDF (30MB) 8 bit colour (600 DPI)
  • JPEG image (42MB) 16 bit colour (full size)
  • JPEG image (9MB) 16 bit colour (resized to 50%)
  • JPEG image (3MB) 16 bit colour (resized to 25%)
